Oxford was once known as ‘The Gravel Capital of the World’, shipping 5 million tons of gravel a year. Quite a few of the lakes in Oxford are old gravel pits. They dug sand and gravel out of the ground and at some point they would dig deep enough and hit an underground spring. For years many of these gravel pit lakes sat undeveloped. Developers realized the value of these lakes and have built beautiful planned subdivisions around the lakes. They have developed these old gravel pits and built big, beautiful homes. There are more lakes in the area because of this. Many of the lakes around Oxford are smaller old gravel pit lakes. Oxford sits on a huge gravel vein left by the glaciers. Mining began in 1911 and by the 1950’s there were five companies mining here.
Many of the lakes near Oxford are electric motor only lakes because they are so small. They just are not big enough for active water sports enthusiasts. Many of the little lakes are not big enough even to put a speed boat on. Some of the positive things about Oxford area lakes are mostly sandy bottom lakes because they are old gravel pits. The water is usually clear because the lakes are spring fed and deep. These lakes are great for swimming, and paddling around. Some of the lakes in the Oxford area were created by glaciers and not man made lakes.

You are going to find on some of these Oxford Lakes that they have developed subdivisions around the lake in the last twenty to thirty years. The lake homes are newer built brick colonials, cape cods, and ranches. They range in size from 2000 square feet to over 3500 square feet. They have two and three car garages, soaring ceilings, open layouts, big master bedroom suites with walk in closets and basements. Some of the basements are walkout or daylight basements.
Of course on some of the natural lakes in Oxford Michigan you will find small older cottages and of course there are homes of all sizes, agents, and styles on these older natural lakes. You will find about any type of home you want on Oxford area lakes.

Like I commented earlier in this article many of Oxford area lakes that many of them are smaller in size. There are no big all sports lakes over 200 acres in Oxford Michigan. The closest big lake is going to be Lake Orion. Though the Stringy Chain of Lakes is an all sports lake and they add up to a good sized lake.
Whatever smaller lake your are looking for in Oxford or whatever type of home you are looking for you can find it. Some people will not like them because they want an all sports lake but the draw of water is strong for many buyers. There are many reasons why people love water. Sometimes it reminds them of happy times on vacation. Some just love the calming effect and peace they get from being on the water.
