Thompson Lake Homes are a mix of old and new. There are no mega mansions on the lake. There are no 5000 or 6000 square foot homes on the lake. I would call the homes more of normal type lake homes and homes that you would see in any subdivision in any city. The waterfront homes on the lake vary from older small ranch homes that were once summer cottages that have been converted to year round homes, to newer larger 2000 - 3900 square foot, brick and vinyl homes. Most of the newer and bigger homes are on the east side of the lake. On the south and west side you will find the older and sometimes smaller homes. Here are the basic characteristics of lakefront homes on Thompson Lake.
The lake houses were built between the years 1930 to 2006. They usually have two to five bedrooms and one to four and a half bathrooms. The lake house styles are ranches, colonials, cape cods, bungalows, and contemporary. The homes range in size from 700 square feet to 3900 square feet. Some homes have no garage, but most are 2 to 3 1/2 car garages. Most of the lake homes have basements though some lake homes are on crawl spaces.
There are no condominiums on the lake. There are only single family residences. The lake houses are hooked up to sewers and some homes are on municipal water. Though some are on wells. Most of the homes sit on lots that are smaller than an acre. There are only a couple of homes that are over an acre, but just barely.

Thompson Lake is a public all sports lake that is about 252 acres in size. They estimate the average depth of the lake to be 9 feet deep. The deepest spot on the lake is 52 feet deep. The lake is spring fed and fed by Alger Creek. There is no restaurant on the lake you will have to go to downtown Howell or along M-59 to go to dinner. The roads around the lake are paved.
There is public access for local residents and even non residents has access to the lake from the Howell City park on the west side of the lake. There is quite a few parking spots so you will always have a place to park. There is a public beach in the park too. There is no state approved water ski course, and no marina on the lake. There are a couple of canals and one island on the lake. The children on the lake go to Howell schools.
Thompson Lake is a public lake, some people say it is semi-private but it is not. The city of Howell has a park on the lake that they sell stickers for parking at the park. It is $20 for a day and $80 for an annual pass for non residents. It is a steep price that keeps non resident fishermen off the lake. As one guy said on a fishing website "why pay that much when you can fish for free or cheaper on so many other lakes". I am sure it is the same way with many boater. Residents are considered people who live in the city of Howell, Oceola Twp, Genoa Twp and Marion Twp.
Thompson Lake's proximity in the city limits of Howell makes it a valuable resource to the community
and it receives high recreational use. Shoreline development is extensive and most of the natural shore
has been changed. The city maintains boat launch off Roosevelt Road on the northeast shore.
Adjacent to the boat launch is a city park and cemetery. The south shore remains as the only
significant portion of the lake in a semi-natural state largely due to shallow water depth and emergent
vegetation. The remaining shoreline is developed with residential housing, many of which have had
rock rip-rap or sea walls installed for shore protection.
The deepest part of the lake is 52 feet that is found just north of the island in the central portion of the lake. An estimated 75% of the lake depth is 10 feet or less. Thompson Lake was once three small lakes before it was damned. The bigger lake came about in 1834 when Thompson built a grist mill at one end of the lake and installed a dam. The City of Howell Parks and Recreation Dept maintains the boat launch, a beach, picnic grounds, play grounds and a cemetery.

Alger Creek enters Thompson Lake on the southeast shore as an outlet from Lake Chemung. An
additional inlet which serves as the Earl Lake outlet is located on the south shore. It flows into Earl Lake and then into Lake Chemung. You cannot boat to either lake. It is too shallow and small. Alger Creek then
exits Thompson Lake at the north shore and flows northerly to its confluence with Bogue Creek and
eventually the South Branch Shiawassee River.

In southern Michigan warmwater lakes, bluegill are one of the most abundant fish species present and
