Lake Shinanguag or Lake Shinny as the residents call it is the biggest lake near Goodrich. There are quite a few smaller lakes but non are as big as Lake Shinanguag. Many of them are not all sports lakes nor big enough to do tubing or water skiing on. Lake Shinanguag is a private all sports lake that is about 238 acres in size. It does not have a public boat launch site, or a DNR boat launch site. Nor does it have a city, county, or public beach.

The water source for the lake is Kearsley Creek and spring fed. The lake lies entirely in Atlas Township in Genessee County. There is no marina, gas station, bar, or restaurant on the lake. The roads around the lake are a mixture of paved and gravel roads. The homes are on well and septic systems. There are no water ski courses, condominiums, or canals on the lake.

The children on the lake go to Goodrich schools. The lake lots are all different sizes. There are several that are over two acres in size. Shinanguag Lake is located about two and a half miles south of Goodrich west of m-15 and north of Ortonville MI.

Lake Shianguag is the summer hot spot for lake residents in Goodrich! On any given summer day you'll find families out on the water boating, jet skiing, skiing and tubing.From an aerial view of the lake it looks like there are two islands on the lake. It looks like there is a home on one of the islands. At one of the islands people gather in the shallow area, hang out and swim at.
There will be people swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing. In the winter the lake is awash with ice shanties and snowmobiles. Lake Shinanguag is one of Genesse County's hidden gem!
History of Lake Shinanguag: The lake was originally named Neshinanguac Lake. Somewhere between 1873-1907 the name of the lake was changed from Neshinanguac Lake to Lake Shinanguag, an exact date was not found. Lake Shinanguag originally consisted of a spring fed swamp so in May of 1955, Lake Shinanguag began to be flooded and . On the west banks of Neshinanguac Lake, in the highway (Ridge Road), is the grave of an Indian mother, with her child. It was once a spring fed swamp but today it’s a pristine lake that many call home.

Here is a quick idea of what Shinanguag Lake homes are like. All the homes are on well and septic systems. The homes were not built until after the 1960's because Lake Shinaguag was not even a lake in the 1950's until they flooded a swamp to make the lake. The waterfront homes were built from the 1960's to the present time.
