If you are like some lakefront home buyers you are going to want a bigger lake. Of course there are people that like the smaller lakes too. Some lake home buyers will only consider large all sports lakes. If you are looking for a home on a large all sports lake you will find that there is a lot of competition for the homes. It is hard to find a decent one under $300,000 in 2018. Many people have to sacrifice the size of the lake in order to get the type of house that they want. So they will find a home on a smaller all sports lake.
Here are a few reasons lake home buyers want big lakes in Oakland County. Here are a few of them the reasons I have heard.
- My family wants to be on a big lake because my husband gets bored on little lakes. We want to go around the lake on our pontoon and not be home in 10 minutes.
- The guy in the family wants to by a speed boat and go fast.
- We are water sports enthusiast that love water skiing and wake boarding
- We want to take our grand kids tubing
Commute time is important to some lake home buyers. These lakefront home buyers wanted to be on a bigger all sports lake in Commerce Township that is closer to the expressways or M-5. That way they are spending more time with family than spending it on the road.
You have your choice of some very nice all sports lake in the township. Below I have listed the 5 largest all sports lakes in Commerce Township so you can understand more about them. The lakes range in size from 455 acres down to Two of them are only partially in the township. Actually the 2 lakes (Union Lake and Middle Straits Lake) are barely in Commerce. The lakes just have a small corner in the township. If I had to pick out one lake as the most prestigious or most desirable I would say it is Union Lake. There are many elegant luxury homes on the lake and even the small cottages are getting a very high price per square foot.
You can see the boats on the lake having a good time.
Middle Straits Lake Waterfront houses on Middle Straits Lake are not too far from Haggerty Road and M-5 so commuting to I-96 is easier. I would say the average home on the lake ranges from 2000 to about 3000 square feet in size. Of course there are smaller one and bigger ones too. Middle Straits Lake is a public all sports lake that is about 172 acres in size. The public launch is a West Bloomfield Township launch. The launch is separated from the parking area so it makes it a little tougher to launch and park. Plus you are competing for parking spots with the people using the park and the beach. So I don’t think there is a large number of boats being put on the lake. However like most lakes in South Eastern Michigan the lake will be busier on the weekends and on holidays.
Remember both Union Lake and Middle Straits Lake only have a small part of the lakes in Commerce. Over 90% of the lakes are in West Bloomfield. All three of these big lakes above have a wide range of homes on them. From small cottage like homes and to large elegant luxury lake estate style homes. These big luxury lake homes have all been custom built to the owners specifications.

Lower Straits Lake – All the houses on Lower Straits Lake are in Commerce as the lake only lies in the township. The lake is west of Union Lake Road and between Richardson Road and Commerce Road. What is nice about the lake is that you are not too far from the shopping on Union Lake Rd and Haggerty Road. You are also not too far from M-5 and I-96. The lake is about 236 acres in size. I would call it an upper end lake because there are more luxury homes on it than what I would call regular homes. It is a private all sports lake that does have regular and cottage type homes on the north side of the lake. The south side of the lake is where you will find the bigger brick contemporary and colonial homes.
Lake Sherwood Many lake home owners just love Lake Sherwood in Commerce because not only is it close to the expressways via Wixom Rd. But it is what I call a subdivision lake. Lake Sherwood is a man made lake and a planned community. Basically it is a subdivision with a lake in the middle of it. The majority of the homes were built in the same time. Most of the homes are brick homes with attached garages. Yes, some are colonials, some are ranches, and some are split level homes. But there are no really odd homes in the subdivision. Like an old lake cottage would stand out. The lake is about 258 acres in size including the canals.
Commerce Lake Commerce Lake is located just north of Oakley Park Road and east of Benstein Road. Many people call it Commerce Lake but it is actually two lakes. One is North Commerce Lake and the other is South Commerce Lake. Depending on who you talk to the lake is either 235 acres or 293 acres. It is a good size private all sports lake. Only the lake residents can put a boat on the lake and there is no DNR Launch. Commerce Lake is desirable to many Oakland County Lake home owners because it is relatively close to the highways. If you don’t know about the lakes area in Oakland County rush hour can be trying. Many of the roads around the lakes are only two lane and curve around the lakes. So at 5 o’clock it can be very busy. It can add an half an hour to your commute if you pick a lake in mid to north Oakland County.
The homes are either custom built luxury homes or waterfront homes and cottages on Commerce Lake. Many of them have been remodeled over the years, or are being remodeled. You will still find small cottages on the lake, but you will also find bigger homes on the lake. There are some homes on the lake that are valued at over a million dollars. So when searching for a lake home you will find all types of lake homes in Commerce.
Union Lake Union Lake is a deep lake in some spots. The deepest spot is 110 feet deep. It is one of Oakland County’s glacial formed lakes. It is a public all sports lake that is about 455 acres in size. The lake lies south of Cooley Lake Rd and east of Union Lake Road in the northeast corner of Commerce and northwest corner of West Bloomfield. Union Lake in W Bloomfield is going to be a busy lake on the weekends and especially on holidays. The public boat launch is managed by the DNR and requires a fee to launch a boat unless you have a yearly pass. The lake has no islands but it does have a big peninsula on the west side of the lake. I would call it more of a round lake. There is a sand bar out in the middle of the lake that many people hang out on. I would call it Union Lake’s social club. Another added benefit of the lake is there is nice restaurant called Matter of Taste. It is not your normal pizza or bar food type of place. I would call it fine dining.
